Billy Blagg's 16th Annual Advent Calendar of Christmas Songs
I was in the town cen.. Sorry! CITY centre last night and someone recognised me.

"Hey Blagg, you're a fan of this football malarkey ain't ya? I expect you'll have no time for the Advent Calendar of Christmas Songs this year?".

I said nothing, just reached into my greatcoat and removed a book from the voluminous folds. For there is a book - of course there is! - and it contains all those Christmas songs that haven't made the cut previously. I chose a page at random and showed it to my new friend and I saw his eyes glisten as he glimpsed some of the names within. "The book...the book" he mumbled, stumbling off into the night.

While I was away last week I was eating in a nice restaurant and they were playing lounge versions of classic 70s British Christmas pop rock songs. I kinda thought of you Billy.

Always a welcome site on WHO, Mr. B.

Don't "do" Christmas as I gave up all the religious stuff years...decades...ago. But this, to me, is seasonal; the run-up to Spring, a way off yet, but a sign that it's coming (and the oxen need a good yoking).

Calendar Home Page
Thanks for the early support, fellow WHO'ers.

I think everyone knows the drill by now but for anyone joining this for the first time, it's one song a day from 1st December up to and including the 25th.

There's a home page at https://www.billyblaggsannualadventcalendarofchristmassongs.co.uk/
where you can link through to all the other years pages and play the songs and watch the videos on YouTube and don't forget now listen on Spotify as well so you can download and play them in the car and aggravate the wife and kids. Double whammy!

Day 1 - Winter Wonderland - The Courteeners
The first day on the Calendar and, as has become traditional, more of a seasonal offering than an outright Christmas track to get the rest of you adjusted before you get the loft ladder down.

This was released as a charity single in 2015 and appeared in my Christmas notebook at the time. I'm sure I would have played it then but I must have assumed it would be the seasonal chestnut 'Winter Wonderland' (see Eurythmics https://blaggadventcalendarchristmassongs2015.blogspot.com/2015/12/day-1-winter-wonderland-eurythmics.html) and not bothered - which is a shame as I've rediscovered it this year, found it's not THAT 'Winter Wonderland' and realised it's something of seasonal gem.

Written on Nora Jones' piano in her home in New York by frontman Liam Frey - Did she know? Did he break in and Nora returned home like Momma Bear and was 'Who's been playing my piano?' while Liam has legged it down the Publishing office leaving her window slightly open? - all proceeds from the single went to Shelter so if you're listening to this perhaps drop something in their box next time you pass, eh ya tight b'stard?

Re: Day 1 - Winter Wonderland - The Courteeners
Good start, Billy!

Winter and wonderland rarely go together other than on postcards, in songs and, if you're lucky, in your own perception. Otherwise it's cold and wet and dark. An ideal place to go walking in a...
